Steam Player Count Surges Post-Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has reached a significant milestone with the release of its long-awaited final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios rolled out BG3’s Patch 8, the game's last major update. This update has sparked a notable increase in player numbers, propelling BG3 just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game's player count has now surged to over 169,000.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to X (formerly Twitter) on April 22 to acknowledge the unexpected rise in player numbers following Patch 8's release. He highlighted the game's robust mod support, indicating it allows the studio to shift focus towards their next ambitious project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will depart from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative horizons.

As a result, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, will continue the Baldur’s Gate saga without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

Exciting Additions: 12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and Beyond!

Patch 8, first announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been meticulously crafted. It introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and more.
