AI RAM Demand Threatens High-End Gaming for Years

Rising RAM costs are causing worry that high-end gaming may face long-term challenges.

The surge in AI data center demand is consuming a massive share of global memory and storage supplies, fueling price increases that analysts warn could persist for years. The era of affordable SSDs, DRAM, and hard drives is ending as AI's hunger for chips far exceeds available production.

These market shifts are already having an impact. PC system integrator CyberPowerPC announced price increases for memory modules in the U.S. and UK, citing "market conditions."

"Global RAM prices have recently jumped by 500%, while SSD costs have doubled," CyberPowerPC stated. "This directly raised the cost of building gaming PCs starting October 1, 2025." The new pricing takes effect December 7.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney highlighted the potential severity on social media. "RAM price hikes will pose a genuine challenge for high-end gaming for the next several years," he tweeted. "Leading-edge DRAM production is being prioritized for AI, where data centers can outbid consumer electronics manufacturers."

The volatility is becoming so pronounced that, as reported by PCWorld, some retailers have begun selling RAM at dynamic, daily market rates. CyberPowerPC noted the unfortunate timing, with these increases hitting just ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The problem may extend well into the future. "The AI infrastructure buildout is consuming a huge portion of the semiconductor supply, and 2026's total demand looks to significantly exceed this year's," Dan Nystedt, TriOrient Research Vice President, told CNBC.

CNBC notes that AI servers rely heavily on processors from designers like Nvidia, which extensively use High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM). Nystedt explained that AI server firms are willing to pay a premium for top-tier chips. "This could be very negative for PCs, laptops, consumer electronics, and automotive sectors, all of which depend on inexpensive memory," he added.

Concerns also extend to video game console pricing. Online speculation suggests Microsoft may be forced to raise Xbox console prices again due to the memory shortage. Valve has not yet announced pricing for its next-generation Steam Machine, and unstable RAM costs could be a contributing factor.
