Your first encounter with Rompopolo happens in Chapter 2, during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. You'll find it in the Oilwell Basin region as you journey to Azuz City. Defeating Rompopolo here is essential to progress. Once you've vanquished it at least once, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then challenge it again either by roaming the Oilwell Basin or by initiating the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.

To prepare effectively for this battle, arm yourself with water-element weapons, ideally obtained from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Also, equip gear that offers fire resistance, which can be farmed from Uth Duna (starting with the belt and greaves) or Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I or a general defense charm like the Defense Charm I. Don't forget to boost your health and stamina by grilling a meal before the fight.

Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo is a unique wyvern with a body that uses gas-filled, saggy skin for a variety of gas-based attacks, including explosions. It can also inflict poison, so carrying Antidotes is crucial. Your Palico can help cleanse these ailments, but it's not always reliable.

Here are the key attacks to be aware of:

  • Arm Swipe – Rompopolo uses its clawed arms for two quick forward swipes. Easy to dodge due to limited range.
  • Lunge With Arm Swipe – It charges forward, raising its arms for an arcing swipe attack.
  • Tail Swing – Rompopolo swings its tail at its target.
  • Poison Stream or Swipe – It either sprays a stream of poison gas or charges while swinging its head, spreading poison.
  • Oil Explosion – From a distance, Rompopolo injects gas into oil pools to cause explosions. Dodge to avoid damage.
  • Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, it pumps more gas into the oil for a larger explosion. Dodging is essential to avoid significant damage.

Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

At the end of your battle, you have the choice to either kill or capture Rompopolo. Capturing requires weakening the monster until your Palico notes it's "tired," then using a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap followed by at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out and complete the capture.

Both methods yield different item rewards, though the differences may be subtle. Some items are exclusive to capturing, while others drop only upon killing. Below are the potential low-rank and high-rank item drops from Rompopolo:
