Destiny 2's Prophecy Year: Key Details for Guardians
Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup for Destiny 2, marking the "Year of Prophecy" with a series of expansions and updates that promise to enhance the experience for both paying and free players. This year is set to be packed with four major content releases, including two paid expansions and two significant updates accessible to all players.
Kicking off the year, the "Rite of the Nine" update is now available at no extra cost. This update offers a fresh take on dungeon diving, appealing to both seasoned players and newcomers. Familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep will feature unique twists, allowing players to reconnect with Orin and explore refreshed dungeon weapons.
On July 15, the new expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, will launch, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga. This paid expansion reintroduces the enigmatic Nine and introduces new characters, Lodi and Ikora, who will play pivotal roles. Set on the new destination, Kepler, inspired by the puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges of Destiny 2’s dungeons, players can expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Simultaneously, on July 15, major core game innovations will be introduced, including revised armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting opportunities. A new activity selection screen, the Portal, will allow players to choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops. These options cater to different play styles, from quick fireteam action to solo gameplay sessions. Additionally, 50 new modifiers will enable deeper gameplay customization, and curated activity rotations will keep the game fresh and engaging.

The year will conclude with the Shadow & Order update on March 3. Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny’s unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.
These announcements come at a crucial time for Bungie, following significant layoffs in July 2024, which affected 220 staff members, or 17% of its workforce, less than a year after another round of layoffs. Despite these challenges, Bungie remains committed to delivering rich content for Destiny 2 players.
In addition to Destiny 2, Bungie is also working on the reboot of Marathon, revealed in May 2023. Recent hands-on previews have been promising, suggesting that Marathon could satisfy the long-standing demand for a new Bungie PvP experience when it launches on PC and consoles in September.
