Nintendo Switch 2 Tariff Delays Pre-Orders in Canada

Author : Audrey May 05,2025

Gamers around the world let out a collective groan last week when the eagerly awaited Nintendo Switch 2 preorder date shifted from April 9 to an indefinite "who knows when?" This change came in the wake of import tariffs introduced by President Trump, which threw financial markets into disarray. The ripple effect has crossed borders, with Nintendo Canada confirming that pre-orders in Canada are also postponed. So, if you were planning to get your cousin in Winnipeg to snag one for you, you'll need to rethink that plan.

"Nintendo of Canada has announced that pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not commence on April 9, 2025, aligning with the timing to be determined in the U.S.," stated Nintendo of Canada in a release to the Canadian tech outlet MobileSyrup.

"Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 remains unchanged."

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start on April 9, 2025, as Nintendo assesses the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 remains unchanged.

While the original pre-order launch was set for tomorrow, there's still no word on when gamers can expect to start frantically refreshing their browsers and verifying their credit card details. This uncertainty has left gamers in limbo and worried about a possible price hike from the initially announced price of $449.99.

In contrast, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders have gone live in the UK today, with smaller retailers such as EE, GAME, and Smyths selling out rapidly. Scalpers have quickly jumped on eBay, reselling pre-orders for £500 ($639) or more, significantly higher than the retail price of £395.99 ($506).
