Smash Bros. Dating App Receives Legal Notice to Stop
Smash Together, an innovative dating app designed specifically for Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts, was poised to launch its open beta on May 15 after months of dedicated development. However, the excitement was abruptly halted when the app's official account posted a disheartening Yoshi meme on May 13, captioned with the words, "We got cease and desisted." The news was first spotted by Automaton.

While the developers did not explicitly name the sender of the cease-and-desist letter, many suspect that it came from Nintendo, given the app's direct connection to the Super Smash Bros. franchise. SmashTogether billed itself as the "premium dating site for Super Smash Bros. enjoyers of all kinds," promising to help users find their "dream Doubles partner (in and out of Smash)" through a specialized matchmaking algorithm. The app aimed to "connect you with your ideal Smash Partner."
Screenshots shared by the app showcased unique features tailored to the Smash Bros. community, such as sections for users to list their "main" character, highlight notable wins, and respond to prompts with a Smash Bros. flair. For instance, one prompt read, "I'm looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major."
Beyond potential issues with intellectual property and copyright infringement, the concept of a dating app centered around a game like Super Smash Bros. likely contributed to the issuance of the cease-and-desist. As of now, there has been no further communication from the SmashTogether team regarding plans to pivot to an alternative concept that does not involve the Super Smash Bros. franchise. In the meantime, we can only commend the restraint shown in this article by avoiding any puns or jokes about "smashing."
