Players & Cards

Tong-Its is designed for three players and uses a standard 52-card Anglo-American deck, excluding jokers. The card ranks are as follows: Ace (1 point), 2-10 (face value), Jack, Queen, King (10 points each).

Objective

The goal is to form sets and runs through drawing and discarding, aiming to minimize the points of unmatched cards in your hand. A run is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., ♥4, ♥5, ♥6 or ♠8, ♠9, ♠10, ♠J), while a set is three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., ♥7, ♣7, ♦7). Note that an Ace is considered low and cannot be part of a run with King and Queen.

The Deal

The initial dealer is chosen at random, and subsequent dealers are the winners of the previous rounds. Cards are dealt counterclockwise, starting with the dealer who receives 13 cards, while the other players get 12 each. The remaining cards form the stock, placed face down.

The Play

Each turn involves the following steps:

• Draw: Begin by taking a card from either the stock or the discard pile. If choosing from the discard pile, you must be able to form a meld immediately.
• Exposing Melds: Optionally, you can lay down valid sets or runs on the table. Melding is not mandatory if drawing from the stock, but at least one meld must be exposed to open your hand. A special move allows you to lay down a set of four face down to open your hand secretly.
• Laying Off (Sapaw): Optionally, add cards to existing melds on the table, whether yours or another player's. This can be done without opening your hand and can block opponents from drawing from the discard pile.
• Discard: End your turn by discarding one card face up onto the discard pile.
