Barbie Director's Narnia Reboot Adds Carey Mulligan to Its Cast
The much-anticipated Narnia reboot, helmed by Greta Gerwig, the acclaimed writer and director behind the hit Barbie movie, has added the talented Carey Mulligan to its expanding ensemble cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mulligan will join an impressive lineup that includes former James Bond actor Daniel Craig, Sex Education's Emma Mackey, and the iconic Meryl Streep.
Gerwig, who will be taking on both writing and directing duties, is set to bring a fresh perspective to C.S. Lewis' beloved fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia. The upcoming film will adapt the prequel novel, The Magician's Nephew, which unfolds before the events of the renowned story, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Carey Mulligan, known for her remarkable performances earning her numerous awards and nominations including Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes, is slated to portray Mabel Kirke, the mother of the young protagonist, Digory. Daniel Craig will take on the role of the titular magician and Digory's uncle. Emma Mackey will bring to life a younger version of the nefarious White Witch, while Meryl Streep lends her voice to the majestic Aslan, the series' god-like talking lion.
This isn't the first time Narnia has been brought to the silver screen. A previous trilogy, released between 2005 and 2010, adapted the first three books in Lewis' series: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. These films featured Tilda Swinton as the White Witch and Liam Neeson voicing Aslan.
Gerwig's new vision for Narnia marks her first major endeavor following the success of the 2023 Barbie film, which not only became an unexpected box office sensation but also garnered eight Academy Award nominations, ultimately winning for Best Original Song. The film starred Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in lead roles.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician's Nephew is scheduled for release in 2026, promising to enchant a new generation of viewers with its magical storytelling and stellar cast.
