Nintendo Switch 2 Confirms 4K, 120fps, Better Battery
Nintendo unveiled extensive details about the Nintendo Switch 2 during its latest Direct presentation, with even more specs emerging afterward. While questions remain, here's everything we currently know about the upgraded console.
Although previously mentioned, Nintendo confirmed the Switch 2 will boast a 7.9-inch wide color gamut LCD screen supporting 1080p resolution (1920x1080). This represents a significant improvement over the Switch 1's 6.2-inch display, the OLED model's 7-inch screen (though we'll miss those vibrant colors), and the Switch Lite's compact 5.5-inch panel.
The system also supports HDR10 and VRR at up to 120Hz, enabling smoother gameplay at 120fps when supported by compatible games and displays.
Docking the Switch 2 enables 4K gaming (3840x2160) at 60fps or 1080p/1440p (1920x1080/2560x1440) at 120fps. These enhanced visuals are powered by an unspecified "custom NVIDIA processor," though detailed CPU/GPU specifications remain under wraps.
The console features a 5220mAh Lithium-ion battery offering approximately 2-6.5 hours of gameplay, with a three-hour charging time in Sleep mode. Nintendo emphasizes these are approximate figures that vary depending on game demands.
This battery performance mirrors the original Switch 1's 2.5-6.5 hour range, though it falls short of newer models: standard Switch (4.5-9 hours), OLED model (4.5-9 hours), and Lite version (3-7 hours).
The Switch 2 measures 4.5" tall × 10.7" wide × 0.55" thick with Joy-Con 2 attached, weighing 0.88 lbs without controllers and 1.18 lbs with them connected.
While matching the original Switch's weight, the upgraded model is noticeably taller and longer than any current version with controllers attached:
Nintendo Switch 2 -4.5" × 10.7" × 0.55" / 0.88 lbsNintendo Switch - 4" × 9.5" × 0.55" / 0.88 lbsNintendo Switch - OLED Model - 4" × 9.5" × 0.55" / 0.93 lbsNintendo Switch Lite - 3.6" × 8.2" × 0.55" / 0.61 lbs
Joy-Con specifications remain uncertain regarding potential Hall Effect joysticks that could eliminate drifting issues. While suggested in a 2023 patent, Nintendo hasn't confirmed this technical improvement.
Audio capabilities include linear PCM 5.1ch output, with virtual surround sound achievable through headphones or built-in speakers after a system update.
The Switch 2 includes 256GB internal storage – a substantial upgrade from previous models' 32GB (Switch/Lite) or 64GB (OLED). Notably, the new system requires microSD Express cards (up to 2TB) rather than supporting existing microSDXC cards.
Additional features include Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, two USB-C ports, a 3.5mm CTIA-standard audio jack, and a built-in mono microphone with noise cancellation, echo cancellation, and auto gain control.
