Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, alongside a teaser for its debut game. In an announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG was originally part of Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and Marathon. The studio is currently working on an ambitious project that has sparked significant excitement within the company.

The name teamLFG, which stands for 'Looking For Group,' reflects the studio's focus on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game that draws inspiration from a variety of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." The game will immerse players in a lighthearted, comedic world set within a new mythic, science-fantasy universe.

teamLFG's mission is to create games that foster friendship, community, and belonging. They aim to build an environment where players are excited to log on and find their friends already online, recognize familiar names, and create memorable moments that become legends and memes within the community. As the team puts it, "dat’s da good stuff."

The studio is committed to developing immersive multiplayer worlds that players can enjoy and master for countless hours. They plan to involve their community in the development process through early access playtests, ensuring they can respond to player feedback both before and after the game's launch. This approach will help them to grow the game and its community over the years.

teamLFG's debut game emerged from an incubation project at Bungie, which was spun off amidst significant layoffs last year. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs affecting about 100 employees in November 2023. Another round of layoffs in 2024 impacted 220 more employees, with 155 others being integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during these layoffs that the incubation project, now known as teamLFG, was announced.

Last year, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing through improvements for Destiny 2, indicating a positive influence from the parent company. Since then, Bungie has fully revealed the extraction shooter Marathon and confirmed the future roadmap for Destiny 2. There are reportedly no plans for Destiny 3, and a Destiny spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
