Square Enix Unveils Octopath Traveler 0 for Nintendo Switch

Author : Logan Dec 03,2025

A new installment in the Octopath Traveler series is coming to Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game was first revealed during today's Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase and is scheduled to launch on all platforms on December 4, 2025.

In Octopath Traveler 0, players can create a customizable character for the first time and embark on a "journey of restoration" after their hometown of Wishvale is destroyed by fire.

The debut trailer showcased the series' signature HD-2D visual style, featuring turn-based combat and the ability to rebuild Wishvale by designing and placing homes and other structures. According to a press release, the game will include over 30 recruitable party members and bring back the Break & Boost battle system.

If the concept of an Octopath Traveler prequel seems familiar, it's because this title incorporates story elements from Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, a free-to-play mobile spin-off originally released in Japan in 2020 and globally in 2022.

Square Enix clarified in a blog post that while Octopath Traveler 0 draws inspiration from that game's narrative and gameplay concepts, it has been developed as a full-fledged console and PC RPG from the ground up. It includes expanded story content, new character backstories, full voice acting, and the aforementioned town-building mechanics.

"The title Octopath Traveler 0 reflects the idea of embarking on a journey shaped by your own choices," stated producer Hirohito Suzuki. "Whether you've played the original Octopath Traveler, Champions of the Continent, or are completely new to the series, this game offers original experiences for everyone. We're excited for players to dive into this fresh narrative."

The first Octopath Traveler was released for Nintendo Switch in 2018 and later arrived on other platforms in the following years. Octopath Traveler 2 launched in 2023.

Today's presentation also featured Square Enix unveiling a second HD-2D title: The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, an all-new action RPG.
