Square Enix Reveals Kingdom Hearts 4 Updates and Screenshots, Commits to Meeting Fan Expectations

Square Enix has officially confirmed—this time with clarity and visual proof—that Kingdom Hearts 4 is still in active development, following a previous day’s ambiguous statement. The developer shared a new message on social media accompanied by exclusive images, leaving no room for speculation about the project's ongoing status.

Earlier yesterday, Square Enix announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the mobile-based action RPG. However, the company used that opportunity to reassure fans that its mainline sequel, Kingdom Hearts 4, remains a top priority. “We’re currently working hard on Kingdom Hearts 4 and will continue pouring ourselves into the game’s development. We’re dedicated to making this an experience that lives up to your expectations!” read the first of two posts.

The message was paired with a collage of screenshots offering a rare glimpse into the game’s progress. These visuals showcase a variety of elements from the upcoming title, including character appearances, cinematic stills, combat sequences, platforming segments, and even a dramatic shot of a massive enemy encounter.

In a follow-up post, Square Enix expressed gratitude for the overwhelming fan support: “We’ve seen how excited you are, and we are truly grateful from the bottom of our hearts. We are equally excited and can’t wait to share more about Kingdom Hearts IV when the time is right. Until then, we appreciate your patience. Thank you for your continued support.”

This update marks the first official news regarding the long-awaited sequel in several months. The last public mention was a brief and vague tease released back in January. Despite having revealed the game publicly in September 2022 with a full cinematic trailer, Square Enix had remained largely silent since then—until now.

Series director Tetsuya Nomura has previously indicated that Kingdom Hearts 4 will begin steering the franchise toward its final chapter. After 22 years and 18 entries in the series, the narrative is finally moving toward resolution.

As for the canceled mobile title Missing-Link, Square Enix issued a sincere apology to fans who were eagerly awaiting its release. The studio explained it made the difficult decision to cancel the project after determining it would be challenging to deliver a service that could sustain player satisfaction over the long term.
