Actress Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, is reportedly in final negotiations to star in Legendary Pictures' live-action Gundam adaptation.

The project was officially announced in February as a joint production between Bandai Namco and Legendary Entertainment. Sweet Tooth showrunner Kim Mickle is attached to write and direct the currently untitled film, which will receive a global theatrical release.

Bringing Anime's Biggest Mecha to Life

Variety first broke news of Sweeney's potential casting, though details about her character remain undisclosed. The actress recently starred in the superhero film Madame Web and has been expanding her producing credits, including an upcoming horror project based on a Reddit story.

The studios describe Gundam as revolutionizing robot anime when it debuted in 1979, introducing complex themes beyond typical good-versus-evil narratives. The franchise pioneered "real robot" storytelling with its:

  • Grounded wartime depictions
  • Technologically plausible mecha designs
  • Nuanced character relationships
  • Military-political drama elements

"We'll share more details as production progresses," representatives from Legendary and Bandai Namco stated, withholding plot specifics and release timeframe. Fans worldwide await further casting announcements and production updates for this ambitious adaptation.
