'We Have Not Modified It' — The Witcher 4 Director Responds to Speculation CD Projekt Changed Ciri's Face
The Witcher 4 director clarifies Ciri's in-game model: no changes made. Following the release of a behind-the-scenes video showcasing new close-ups of Ciri, speculation arose regarding alterations to her facial appearance. Some viewers noted differences between these shots (at 2:11 and 5:47) and her portrayal in the cinematic reveal trailer.
This fueled existing online discussions about Ciri's appearance. However, game director Sebastian Kalemba confirmed via social media that Ciri's in-game model remains unchanged. He explained the discrepancies as "raw footage" captured before the application of cinematic effects like lighting and animation. The variations, he stated, are a normal part of game development, with character appearances potentially differing across trailers, 3D models, and the final in-game product.
The Witcher 4, the first in a new trilogy, features Ciri as the protagonist, a decision supported by executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga and Geralt's voice actor, Doug Cockle. Mitręga highlighted Ciri's significance in the Witcher saga and the opportunity to explore her character more fully. Kalemba emphasized the deliberate nature of this choice, stemming from discussions dating back nine years. He underscored the potential for player agency in shaping Ciri's character, contrasting with the established Geralt.
While acknowledging potential negative reactions, both Mitręga and Kalemba affirmed Ciri's role as protagonist was a carefully considered and ultimately, the right choice for the narrative.
