Chess is one of the world's oldest and most popular board games, enjoyed by millions globally. Play offline against an AI on your device or challenge chess masters online. Originating in India around the 6th century AD, chess spread across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe.

Chess is played on an 8x8 square board, with rows numbered 1 to 8 and columns labeled a to h. The 64 squares alternate between light and dark, and each player starts with a light square on their right-hand side.

Each player starts with 16 pieces: 8 Pawns, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 2 Rooks, 1 Queen, and 1 King. White always moves first, and players then take turns moving one piece per turn.

There are over 2000 chess variants, including Bughouse Chess, Chess960, 3-Check Chess, and Four-Player Chess.
