2XKO Hopes to Revolutionize Tag-Team fighting Games
Riot Games' 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize tag-team fighting games. This article explores its innovative features and the recently available playable demo.

Redefining 2v2 Combat
2XKO, showcased at EVO 2024, introduces "Duo Play," a unique twist on the traditional tag-team format. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This allows for thrilling 2v2 matches, and even 2v1 showdowns where a single player manages two champions.

The core gameplay revolves around a Point character and an Assist character within each team. Three key tag mechanics enhance the strategic depth:
- Assist Actions: The Point character can summon the Assist for special moves.
- Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist instantly swap roles.
- Dynamic Save: The Assist can interrupt enemy combos to save their partner.
Unlike some tag fighters, both players must be defeated to win a round. Even knocked-out champions can still act as Assists, adding another layer of strategy.

Strategic Synergies: The Fuse System
Beyond character selection, 2XKO introduces "Fuses"—team-based synergy options that alter gameplay. The demo featured five Fuses:
- PULSE: Rapid attacks unleash devastating combos.
- FURY: Below 40% health, bonus damage and special dash cancel.
- FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
- DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner's.
- 2X ASSIST: Amplify your partner's assist actions.
Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse System's role in boosting player expression and enabling powerful coordinated attacks.

A Roster of League of Legends Champions
The playable demo featured six champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each with movesets reflecting their League of Legends abilities. While Jinx and Katarina were absent from this Alpha Lab Playtest, their inclusion in the future has been confirmed.
Alpha Lab Playtest and Beyond
2XKO, a free-to-play title for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 (launching in 2025), recently held an Alpha Lab Playtest. Further details on future playtests can be found in related articles.
