Captain America 4 Nears $300M Globally Despite Box Office Dip

Captain America: Brave New World's global box office haul is nearing $300 million, but a significant 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend raises concerns about its profitability. Deadline reports a $180 million production budget and a break-even point of approximately $425 million.

The film exceeded expectations with a $100 million domestic opening weekend, but its second weekend brought in only $28.2 million. This steep decline mirrors the performance of 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to recoup its costs.

After two weekends, Captain America: Brave New World has grossed an estimated $289.4 million globally ($141.2 million domestically and $148.2 million internationally), adding $63.5 million worldwide in its second weekend, according to Comscore. While currently the biggest theatrical release of 2025, the substantial second-weekend drop is a cause for concern. Comscore senior analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented to Variety, stating that this decline reflects less audience enthusiasm than typically seen with Marvel films. Deadline projects a final global box office total around $450 million.

The film's release coincided with largely negative critical reception. IGN's review awarded it a 5/10, criticizing its lack of originality and ultimately underwhelming execution despite strong performances from the cast.

Marvel Studios and Disney are hoping for a resurgence in ticket sales to reverse a recent trend of underperforming MCU films (excluding last year's successful Deadpool & Wolverine), and to build momentum for upcoming releases: Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
