EA Releases Source Code for Four C&C Games
Electronic Arts has taken a bold step by releasing the source code for four iconic titles in the Command & Conquer series. These games—Command & Conquer, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Renegade, and Command & Conquer: Generals—are now freely available on GitHub under an open license. This move allows both fans and developers to delve into, modify, and enhance these cherished classics, opening up a world of possibilities for the community.
In addition to making the source code accessible, EA has also introduced Steam Workshop support for the newer Command & Conquer games that run on the SAGE engine, including Kane's Wrath and Red Alert 3. This integration facilitates the creation and sharing of custom content, significantly enhancing the community-driven experience. Players can now easily craft and distribute their own mods, adding unique twists and new life to their favorite games.
Although Electronic Arts may not be actively developing new entries in the Command & Conquer franchise at the moment, the series retains a dedicated and passionate fanbase. By releasing the source code and improving modding capabilities, EA is empowering these enthusiasts to keep the series alive and thriving. This initiative not only honors the legacy of Command & Conquer but also has the potential to draw in new players and modders, eager to explore or contribute to the storied history of these strategic classics.
