One of the first defensive skills you'll unlock in the game is Counterattack. While you can guard or dodge most attacks with perfect timing, there's a special type of attack called Burst Attacks that you can't block with Brink Guard. These are powerful moves that can drain your stamina and health significantly. You'll know a Burst Attack is coming when you see a flashing symbol on your screen accompanied by a distinct sound effect. This is your signal to get ready for a Counterattack.
To execute a Counterattack, use the input L1+Circle/LB+B, but remember, timing is key. It's not just about pressing the buttons; you need to align the Counterattack animation with the moment the enemy's attack hits you. It takes practice to get this right.
A successful Counterattack will not only prevent you from taking any damage but also fully restore your stamina and stagger your enemy, giving you a prime opportunity to deal significant damage quickly. Use this move against enemies with Burst Attacks, like The Viper, to make your battles easier.

While Brink Guard is already a solid defense mechanism, Reflection offers an additional layer of strategy by allowing you to deal damage while staying protected. This skill becomes essential when facing tougher bosses later in the game, as it provides a window for retaliation when used correctly.
To perform Reflection, press L1+Triangle/LB+Y. This initiates a short animation where Khazan swings his weapon towards the target. The trick is to time the swing so it connects with the enemy's attack animation. A successful Reflection inflicts significant stamina damage and stuns the enemy. As you upgrade the skill, it can also deal health damage and shorten the animation window for more precise timing. However, mastering when to use it against different attacks will take practice.
Be aware that if you miss the timing, you'll take both health and substantial stamina damage, putting you at a disadvantage. Also, remember that Reflection can't be used against Burst Attacks or grabs.
Now you're equipped with the knowledge of how to use Counterattack and Reflection in *The First Berserker: Khazan*. For more tips and tricks, be sure to check out The Escapist.
