Monster Hunter Wilds: Protagonist Aims Beyond Extinction
While Monster Hunter is widely celebrated for its epic monster hunts, Capcom is placing a strong narrative emphasis on the connection between hunters, nature, and the creatures they pursue in Monster Hunter Wilds. Dive into what’s new and how this installment will deepen your hunting experience.
Monster Hunter Wilds: A Focus on Humanity and Nature
Redefining the Role of the Hunter
The Monster Hunter universe has always subtly hinted at a balance between humans, monsters, and the natural world. In Monster Hunter Wilds, Capcom is taking that idea further by spotlighting the symbiotic relationship between all living beings within the game’s ecosystem. This deeper thematic approach gives players a more meaningful context for their hunts.
According to game director Yuya Tokuda in an interview with PC Gamer, the core focus of MH Wilds lies in exploring the dynamic interplay between people, nature, and monsters—and what it truly means to be a hunter in such a world. "We wanted to express this not only through gameplay but also through a rich, immersive story," Tokuda explained. "There are many elements we have planned that align with the concept of Monster Hunter Wilds, and we believe this title successfully conveys the message we want to share."
Bringing Character to the Hunter
To enhance this theme, Monster Hunter Wilds introduces a more expressive protagonist than previous entries in the series. For the first time, players will engage in dialogue choices that reflect their character's personality, giving them a stronger presence in the world.
Tokuda highlighted that the game features a diverse cast of characters, each with unique perspectives on nature and monster management. He pointed to Nata and Olivia as examples—two individuals from vastly different backgrounds who approach the same challenges in contrasting ways. "In a world where people live side by side with differing views, we wanted to explore how a hunter would feel and think in that environment. Everyone sees things differently, so we integrated these elements into Monster Hunter Wilds."
This shift toward a more interactive narrative doesn’t compromise the traditional Monster Hunter gameplay experience. Hunters who prefer minimal story engagement can still dive straight into combat and exploration without interruption.
As Tokuda reassured, "Some players may choose to skip the dialogue entirely and just focus on hunting the next monster—and that’s completely fine. The amount of story content won’t impact the number of monsters available, so we aim to satisfy both playstyles." He also teased that this is only the beginning, with many more ideas in development that reinforce the central theme of coexistence between humanity and nature.
