Ninja Gaiden 4 Was the Surprise Reveal at Xbox Developer Direct 2025
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a thrilling surprise: the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja." This highly anticipated sequel, 13 years in the making, promises to deliver the series' signature challenging yet rewarding gameplay.
A New Era for the Ninja Gaiden Franchise
Developed collaboratively by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces a fresh protagonist, Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan striving for mastery. Art Director Tomoko Nishii (PlatinumGames) describes Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the epitome of a ninja. Producer and Director Yuji Nakao (PlatinumGames) explains the decision to introduce a new hero: to broaden the game's appeal to newcomers while ensuring longtime fans remain engaged. Ryu Hayabusa remains a crucial element of the narrative, presenting a formidable challenge and pivotal growth opportunity for Yakumo.
Revamped Combat and a New Style
Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' signature brutal, fast-paced combat, adding a new combat style for Yakumo: the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style, complementing his Raven Style. Team Ninja's Masazaku Hirayama assures fans that despite the differences, the action remains true to the Ninja Gaiden spirit. Nakao highlights the blend of classic Ninja Gaiden challenge with PlatinumGames' dynamic speed and expression. The game is currently 70-80% complete, entering the polishing phase.
Release Date and Availability
Ninja Gaiden 4 launches in Fall 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title. The collaboration between Koei Tecmo and PlatinumGames, facilitated by a strong relationship between their respective CEOs, promises a revitalized Ninja Gaiden experience.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Timely Remake
In addition to Ninja Gaiden 4, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 classic, is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, also included with Xbox Game Pass. This remake, inspired by fan feedback following the 2021 Ninja Gaiden Master Collection release, features additional playable characters like Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel, offering a satisfying experience for both veterans and newcomers alike.
