Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Theory Is Looking Pretty Good Right About Now
The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning lends significant credence to earlier rumors about Joy-Con mouse functionality.
The reveal trailer showcases detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface, connecting to flat-bottomed connectors. These then move across the surface, mimicking mouse movement on a mousepad. A visible slider pad on one connector further supports this theory.
Pre-reveal speculation centered on an internal Joy-Con sensor, similar to those in computer mice. While Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed this feature or its implications, fans anticipate its use in games like Civilization, traditionally better suited to mouse and keyboard controls. However, given Nintendo's innovative history, unique applications within first-party software are also anticipated. The possibilities remain open.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding potential mouse support and a new Joy-Con button, several details about the Switch 2 are confirmed: the name, a 2025 release date, and an upcoming Mario Kart title. Backward compatibility with the original Switch is also assured, with further software announcements promised in an April Direct. Stay updated on all our Nintendo Switch 2 coverage here.
