"Power Rangers Disney+ Series Aims to Revive Franchise for New Fans"
Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: Power Rangers is gearing up for a live-action series set to premiere on Disney+. According to The Wrap, the showrunners behind the successful Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, are currently in discussions to write, produce, and lead this new venture under 20th Century TV. This collaboration aims to bring a fresh take on the beloved series while ensuring it resonates with both new audiences and long-time fans.
The Power Rangers brand, which captured the hearts of '90s kids with its thrilling tales of teenage superheroes and their formidable mechs, is now under the stewardship of Hasbro. The company acquired the franchise along with other assets from Saban Properties in a landmark $522 million deal in 2018. At the time of the acquisition, Hasbro's then-Chairman and CEO Brian Goldner expressed enthusiasm about the brand's potential, stating, "We see significant opportunity for Power Rangers across our entire Brand Blueprint, including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment, as well as geographically throughout our global retail footprint."
This move comes after a less successful 2017 movie reboot that aimed for a darker, grittier take on the Power Rangers story, intended to kickstart a series of sequels. However, due to disappointing box office results, those plans were abandoned, leading to Saban's decision to sell the franchise to Hasbro.
Hasbro's vision extends beyond Power Rangers. The company is also developing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms for Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series, also for Netflix, and is exploring a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe. These projects showcase Hasbro's commitment to expanding its popular franchises across multiple media platforms.
