The Battle of Hulao Gate, a legendary clash in the Dynasty Warriors series, presents a formidable challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. This guide provides a strategic approach to securing victory.

Mission Objective: Defeat Dong Zhuo.

Initial Strategy:

Begin by clearing the four enemy bases in the map's bottom right corner. Conquering two triggers a cutscene introducing mounted cavalry. Continue eliminating bases; defeating Zhang Liao rewards you with the twin pike weapon. Once all bases are secured, assault Hulao Gate.

The First Encounter with Dong Zhuo's Forces:

This initial battle is chaotic. Prioritize protecting Cao Cao until he initiates his Grand Tactic, significantly weakening the enemy defenses.

Lu Bu's Arrival:

Lu Bu's appearance marks a crucial turning point. Avoid direct confrontation. Focus on eliminating officers near the main battle to maintain morale, as Lu Bu's presence severely depletes it. He will eventually target your main base and Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to pursue him. Liu Bei's forces will temporarily contain Lu Bu, giving you a time window to defeat Dong Zhuo. Their defense is not indefinite; once they retreat, you must be close to defeating Dong Zhuo.

Defeating Dong Zhuo:

After Lu Bu's departure, replenish resources at conquered bases if needed. Capture the northern and western bases to prepare for the final assault. Once ready, charge towards Dong Zhuo's forces.

Dong Zhuo's Grand Tactics:

Dong Zhuo will employ two Grand Tactics involving fireballs. The first requires destroying two catapults. Use Musou Rage (if available) to break through enemy lines and eliminate the soldiers and officers guarding the catapults. The second tactic requires defeating an officer. Approach via the right-hand stairs, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan. Defeating her in a duel simplifies the encounter.

Final Assault:

After neutralizing the Grand Tactics, the path to Dong Zhuo is clear. Your forces should overwhelm his remaining troops. Dian Wei might even initiate a Grand Tactic, further easing the final battle. While a duel is tempting, a standard attack should suffice.
