Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nearing Release, Writer Says
Fans of the Star Wars universe, get ready for some exciting news about Shawn Levy’s upcoming film! The director, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine, is still actively involved in this project. Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind the film, shared his enthusiasm with Screen Rant, saying, "I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." This gives us hope that progress is being made on this eagerly awaited movie.
While details about the film remain largely under wraps, we do know it is set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shed some light on its timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era, adding a fresh chapter to the beloved franchise.
Kennedy also confirmed that Levy’s movie will hit theaters after 2026’s The Mandalorian and Grogu. She mentioned, "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that." Adding to the excitement, it has been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this upcoming film.
Despite Tropper's optimistic update, fans will have to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, to see this new Star Wars adventure. Since the release of Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has faced several project cancellations, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in the Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey, continuing her story after The Rise of Skywalker. However, this project has seen several script changes, with Steven Knight recently stepping down after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a central figure in Disney’s plans for the Star Wars saga, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming films.
Moreover, Disney has even more in store for Star Wars fans. X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to early reports, will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to hit screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode. This is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting new era for Star Wars enthusiasts.
