11 Bit Studios Compares This War of Mine to The Alters
Polish developer 11 Bit Studios has unveiled a new trailer for their eagerly awaited sci-fi adventure, The Alters, as its release date draws near. In a nostalgic nod to their past, the creators also took the opportunity to reminisce about one of their most celebrated projects, the wartime survival game This War of Mine, which catapulted the studio to international acclaim over a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is renowned for its somber and despairing ambiance, The Alters explores a more vibrant and frequently humorous storyline that revolves around the trials of alternate versions of its protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite the stark differences in tone, the developers highlight a deep thematic link between the two games.
Though set in contrasting worlds and atmospheres, both titles are centered on the theme of survival. In This War of Mine, players face the grim realities of war within a besieged city, meticulously managing resources and confronting daily challenges to keep their group alive. In contrast, The Alters frames survival as a relentless race against time, where players must continually relocate their mobile base to escape the destructive reach of an unforgiving sun that turns everything to dust.
Both games challenge players to step beyond their comfort zones, pushing them to explore hostile territories in search of scarce resources. The main distinction lies in the protagonists: This War of Mine has players leading a group of ordinary civilians, whereas The Alters introduces a unique team made up of different versions of the main character.
The Alters is slated for release in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Excitingly, the game will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass from launch day, ensuring a wide audience can experience this innovative survival adventure.
