PlayStation Productions Unveils Multiple Game Adaptations
Featuring Helldivers 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and More
On January 7, 2025, PlayStation Productions took center stage at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to announce a series of new adaptations that have fans buzzing with excitement.
Leading the pack is "Ghost of Tsushima: Legends," a captivating new anime series produced in collaboration with Crunchyroll and Aniplex. Set to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027, this series will be directed by Takanobu Mizumo, with Gen Urobuchi handling the story composition. Sony Music will contribute to the project as a music and soundtrack partner, ensuring an immersive experience.
Next up, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, and Ashley Brucks, president of Screen Gems, announced the development of films based on "Horizon Zero Dawn" and "Helldivers 2." Sony Pictures will helm the production of "Horizon Zero Dawn," while Columbia Pictures will oversee "Helldivers 2." Details about these films remain scarce, but anticipation is high. Additionally, they teased the upcoming film adaptation of "Until Dawn," which is set to hit screens on April 25, 2025.
The presentation concluded with a special appearance by Neil Druckmann, who, after discussing Naughty Dog’s upcoming game "Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet," unveiled a new trailer for the second season of "The Last of Us." This season will adapt the storyline from "TLOU II," introducing new characters such as Abby and Dina, further enriching the series' narrative.
With these multiple projects in development, PlayStation is clearly expanding its footprint in the realm of video game adaptations. Successful releases could pave the way for even more of their beloved franchises to be adapted into various media formats.
PlayStation Productions’ Previously Released Adaptations
Sony's venture into video game adaptations isn't new. The journey began with the "Resident Evil" film in 2002, starring Mila Jovovich, which led to five more sequels due to its box office success. Another notable adaptation was "Silent Hill" in 2006, which, despite mixed fan reactions, performed well financially.
In 2019, Sony established PlayStation Productions to focus specifically on adaptations of PlayStation-exclusive titles. Their first major release was the "Uncharted" film in 2022, starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, which was a box office hit. This was followed by the "Gran Turismo" film in 2023, which also exceeded its production budget in earnings.
In 2023, PlayStation Productions also launched the "Twisted Metal" series on Peacock, featuring vehicular combat in a post-apocalyptic setting. While not as critically acclaimed as "The Last of Us" series, it completed production of its second season in late 2024, though a release date has yet to be announced.
Beyond the CES 2025 announcements, PlayStation Productions is also working on film adaptations of "Days Gone" and a sequel to the "Uncharted" film, as well as a "God of War" TV series. These projects, while still under wraps, indicate PlayStation's ongoing commitment to bringing their gaming universes to new audiences.
Given the success and trajectory of Sony and PlayStation Productions, it's clear that more of their popular and major video game franchises will likely be considered for adaptation, driven by fan demand and the potential for successful TV shows and films.
