"Netflix Developing 'D&D Universe' with Live-Action Series"

A live-action Dungeons & Dragons series is reportedly in development at Netflix, according to a recent report from Deadline. The project is set in the iconic Forgotten Realms, the same fantasy universe that served as the backdrop for the 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Larian Studios’ critically acclaimed video game Baldur’s Gate 3.

The series is being spearheaded by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, alongside writer and showrunner Drew Crevello (known for WeCrashed), and Hasbro. Deadline describes this upcoming adaptation as “one of Netflix’s biggest TV bets in the fantasy space to date.” While details remain scarce, it has been confirmed that Crevello wrote the pilot episode and will serve as the showrunner. Neither Netflix nor Hasbro has officially commented on the project.

According to Deadline editor Nellie Andreeva, after “lengthy negotiations—which is not unusual for an IP of that caliber”—the fantasy series is now “set at the streamer for further development.” She added that if successful, the show could potentially launch an entire D&D-centered universe across multiple series and spinoffs.

As anticipation builds around this potential new franchise, fans are also left wondering about the future of the cinematic arm of the D& Dragons universe. Despite critical praise and a strong fan reception, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves underperformed at the box office, leading Paramount Pictures to delay any official plans for a sequel.

In November 2023, star Chris Pine expressed his eagerness to reprise his role, stating he was “pretty confident” a sequel would move forward—but no updates have surfaced since.

Paramount CEO Brian Robbins hinted that a follow-up could still happen, but only if it came with a reduced production budget: “We've got to figure out a way to make it for less.”

Meanwhile, Dungeons & Dragons continues to expand its multimedia reach. Amazon’s Secret Level anthology series recently featured a D&D-inspired animated short, further proving the franchise's versatility across formats.
