Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame system from previous leagues. This guide covers Expedition mechanics, rewards, and the passive skill tree. Four main endgame events exist in PoE 2's Atlas: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions.

Expedition Discovery and Mechanics

Expedition Map Node

Expedition map nodes on the Atlas are marked with a light blue spiral icon. An Expedition Precursor Tablet placed in a completed Lost Tower slot guarantees an Expedition encounter.

Upon entering an Expedition map, locate the central area with Markers and an NPC tent. The core mechanic involves strategically placing Explosives near Markers to trigger events:

  • Red Markers: Detonating near these spawns Runic Monsters. Larger Markers yield larger monster packs. These packs are further empowered by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: These relics provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased monster elemental damage for increased chest rarity).
  • Black Markers (Spiral Symbol): Detonating near these spawns Excavated Chests containing Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, Waystones, and high-end gear.

Use the Explosives UI to visualize AoE. Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal farming. After placing Explosives, activate the Detonator. If overwhelmed, retreat and return later; the event persists.

Expedition Pinnacle Maps and Olroth

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. Use these with Dannig in your hideout to access Expedition Pinnacle Maps – significantly larger events with more Explosives.

These maps feature Olroth, a Pinnacle Boss (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth awards 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, valuable currency, and a chance at unique items. The higher the map level, the greater the chance of Olroth appearing.

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Located within the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances rewards and difficulty. It features Notable nodes and difficulty-increasing nodes for Logbooks. Beating Olroth grants 2x skill points.

Here's a breakdown of Notable nodes:

Notable Expedition Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius (150%), placement range (100%), and reduces enemy Life (20%) N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, Detonation chains travel 50% faster N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage from Runic Monsters Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for increased challenge and rewards. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the significant reduction in Explosives.

Expedition Rewards

Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are key rewards, used to trade with Expedition vendors for specific gear types:

Reward Use Gear Type
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen Belts & Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig Used to acquire other Artifacts
Exotic Coinage Refreshes vendor inventory N/A

Expedition Logbooks open Pinnacle Maps, offering a chance to fight Olroth for exceptional rewards and more skill points.

This comprehensive guide will help you master the Expedition system in Path of Exile 2. Remember to strategize your Explosive placement and upgrade your passive tree wisely to maximize your rewards.
