"Dune: Awakening Devs Detail Sandworm Mechanics"
In *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms are designed to function as a powerful environmental force rather than controllable assets players can summon on command. This sets the game apart from Frank Herbert’s original novels, where characters could attract worms using a device known as a thumper. Such a mechanic will not be present in the game’s current design.

According to the development team, sandworms are classified as NPCs with predefined patrol routes, schedules, and behavioral patterns embedded into the game engine. Players won’t have the ability to deliberately summon a worm near enemy outposts or use them strategically against opponents. However, it is possible to draw a worm’s attention if one is already in proximity—by moving aggressively through sandy terrain or using a thumper-like action. That said, these actions do not guarantee a worm will respond or appear in the area.
One of the more iconic elements from the Dune lore—riding sandworms—will also not be available at launch. As depicted in Herbert’s novels and central to Fremen culture, worm riding remains a fan-favorite concept. The developers noted that pressure from the filmmakers behind the broader Dune cinematic universe was a contributing factor in excluding this feature for now.
While absent at launch, there's still hope for future additions. Post-launch updates may expand on Fremen culture and potentially introduce worm-riding mechanics. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding this possibility.
Dune: Awakening will launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions scheduled to follow at a later date.
