Bioshock Creator Was Shocked by Irrational Games Closure

Ken Levine reflects on the unexpected closure of Irrational Games following the success of BioShock Infinite, describing the decision as "complicated." He reveals the studio's shutdown surprised most of its employees, stating, "I thought they were going to continue. But it wasn’t my company."

Levine, creative director and co-founder of Irrational Games, spearheaded the creation of the critically acclaimed BioShock franchise. The studio's closure in 2014, after the release of BioShock Infinite, led to its rebranding as Ghost Story Games in 2017 under Take-Two Interactive. This event occurred amidst a challenging period for the video game industry, marked by significant layoffs at various prominent studios.

In a recent interview with Edge Magazine (as reported by PC Gamer), Levine discussed the personal struggles he faced during BioShock Infinite's development, ultimately prompting his departure from Irrational. Despite his exit, he anticipated the studio's continued operation. He acknowledges his own shortcomings during this period, stating, "I don’t think I was in any state to be a good leader." Irrational Games, renowned for System Shock 2 and BioShock Infinite, faced unforeseen pressures stemming from Levine's personal circumstances. Levine aimed to mitigate the impact of the studio's closure, striving for "the least painful lay-off we could possibly do," providing transition support for employees.

The Legacy of BioShock Infinite and the Anticipation for BioShock 4

BioShock Infinite, despite its melancholic tone, left a lasting mark on the gaming community. Levine believes Take-Two could have leveraged Irrational's expertise on a BioShock remake, suggesting, "That would have been a good title for Irrational to get their head around."

The upcoming BioShock 4, announced five years ago, remains without a confirmed release date. Developed by 2K and Cloud Chamber Studios, speculation points towards an open-world setting, while retaining the series' signature first-person perspective. Fans eagerly await the next installment, hoping it will incorporate lessons learned from BioShock Infinite's development and reception.
