Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms, Including Steam Deck Performance

Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche find for PS Vita enthusiasts. Fast forward to 2024, and Gundam Breaker 4's global, multi-platform release is a monumental achievement for Western fans. This extended review covers my 60+ hours across various platforms, highlighting its strengths and addressing some current shortcomings.

Gundam Breaker 4's significance extends beyond the game itself. No more importing Asia English releases! The series has finally arrived with a global launch featuring dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options (EFIGS and more). This review will explore the game's core mechanics, story, and platform-specific experiences, culminating in my personal Master Grade Gunpla building journey.

The narrative, while serviceable, has its peaks and valleys. Early dialogue can feel protracted, but the latter half delivers compelling character reveals and more engaging conversations. Newcomers will be brought up to speed, though the significance of certain characters might be initially unclear. (Due to embargo restrictions, this review focuses on the first two chapters, which felt fairly straightforward.) Despite this, I found myself quite fond of the main cast by the end, though my personal favorites appear later.

However, the true heart of Gundam Breaker 4 lies in its unparalleled customization. The depth is astonishing. Beyond individual part adjustments (arms, ranged/melee weapons), players can fine-tune part size and scale, even incorporating SD (super deformed) parts for truly unique creations. Builder parts further enhance customization, adding extra features and skills. EX and OP skills, determined by parts and weapons, along with ability cartridges providing buffs/debuffs, add layers of strategic depth.

Progressing through missions yields materials for part upgrades and rarity increases, unlocking additional skills. The game's balance prevents excessive grinding during the main story (at least on standard difficulty). Three higher difficulties unlock later, significantly increasing the challenge. While optional quests offer extra rewards, they aren't essential for standard difficulty players. The survival mode, unlocked later, is a particularly enjoyable optional quest type.

Customization extends beyond parts. Players can adjust paint schemes, decals, and weathering effects, providing endless possibilities for Gunpla enthusiasts. The sheer depth of customization is remarkable. But how does it all play?

The gameplay is a resounding success. Combat remains engaging, even on easier difficulties. Weapon variety and skill customization maintain freshness. Boss fights involve targeting weak points and managing multiple health bars and shields. One particular boss fight proved challenging due to weapon compatibility, but switching weapons quickly resolved the issue. The only significant challenge was a dual-boss encounter where AI behavior proved troublesome.

Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Early environments feel somewhat sparse, but overall variety is decent. The focus on Gunpla models and animations pays off handsomely. The stylized aesthetic works well and scales effectively on lower-end hardware. Effects are impressive, and the scale of many boss battles is breathtaking.

The soundtrack features a mix of forgettable and excellent tracks. The absence of iconic anime music, usually offered via DLC in previous releases, is disappointing. Custom music loading, a feature in other Gundam titles, is also missing.

Voice acting, however, is a pleasant surprise. Both English and Japanese voice options are well-executed, with a personal preference for the English dub during action sequences.

Minor issues include a repetitive mission type (fortunately infrequent) and a few bugs. One bug prevented name saving, and a couple seem Steam Deck-specific (prolonged title screen loading and a mission crash only occurring when docked).

Online multiplayer was tested on PS5 and Switch pre-release, but PC server testing is pending.

My personal MG 78-2 Version 3.0 Gunpla building project ran concurrently with the game, offering a unique perspective on the design process. This experience highlighted the intricate detail and craftsmanship involved in Gunpla creation.

Platform Differences and Features:

PC Port: Supports over 60fps (unlike the 60fps PS5 and ~30fps Switch versions), mouse/keyboard, and controller support with customizable button prompts. Steam Deck compatibility is excellent, running smoothly with Proton Experimental. Minor visual issues include slightly smaller-than-expected fonts in some menus.

Switch vs. PS5: PS5 offers superior visuals and performance (60fps), while the Switch version compromises on resolution, detail, and reflections, resulting in a less visually impressive experience. Switch load times are significantly longer than PS5. Assembly and diorama modes are noticeably sluggish on Switch.

Ultimate Edition: The additional DLC content, while enjoyable, isn't game-changing. Diorama mode enhancements are welcome, but individual purchase may be preferable.

Story Focus: While the story is fine, the game's core appeal lies in its customization and combat.

Conclusion:

Gundam Breaker 4 is a spectacular entry in the series, delivering a compelling experience across platforms. The Steam Deck version is particularly impressive. While minor issues exist, the game's depth, customization, and engaging gameplay make it a must-have for Gundam and Gunpla fans.
