"Avowed Sequel/DLC Hinted: Sales Satisfy Obsidian, Microsoft"
Avowed's director hints at the team's plans for the franchise following the game's successful release. Dive into the possibilities of expansions or sequels and other exciting developments from the studio.
Avowed Director Eager to Expand the Game's Universe
Avowed has achieved significant success, with Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with its sales figures. In an interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for further development within the franchise.
While Obsidian hasn't officially announced any plans, Patel expressed her enthusiasm for continuing to direct games and her interest in exploring new projects. She hinted at the possibility of expansions and a sequel, stating, "Now that we've built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Navigating Challenges During Avowed's Development
The journey to creating Avowed was fraught with challenges and numerous changes. Patel described the development process as "messy," but ultimately rewarding as the team found its footing.
Originally started in 2018, the project faced hurdles as Obsidian contemplated selling the company, despite successes with titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. The acquisition by Microsoft in 2020 brought new dynamics, leading to the cancellation of several planned features, including multiplayer aspects. A leadership change in January 2021 and a subsequent reboot under Patel's direction shifted the focus to enhancing the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity universe, transitioning from an open world to more manageable open zones.
Reflecting on the process, Patel noted, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Obsidian's Ambition for Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is exploring new avenues. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer revealed interest in developing a tactics game titled Pillars: Tactics.
Sawyer explained the studio's enthusiasm, saying, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he acknowledged the challenges in determining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale.
While the idea of Pillars: Tactics is appealing, Sawyer also expressed his ambition to create Pillars of Eternity 3, aiming for a budget comparable to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, around $100 million, a significant leap from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
