"Jump Ship Preview: Sea of Thieves Meets Left 4 Dead, Now More Polished and Fun"

Author : Logan May 20,2025

It was nearly a year ago at the Game Developer’s Conference when I first encountered Jump Ship, a captivating four-player sci-fi PvE shooter that skillfully integrates elements from Sea of Thieves, Left 4 Dead, and FTL. Having recently played the latest build alongside some of its developers, I am confident that if any indie game is poised to make a significant impact this year, it's Jump Ship. As it approaches its Early Access launch this summer, the game is more polished and enjoyable than ever.

For those unfamiliar with Jump Ship, it's a non-grindy space adventure designed for up to four players. Notably, the team at Keepsake Games is actively incorporating feedback to ensure the game is accessible to solo players as well. They're developing a clever system where narratively constructed AI assistants will help manage the ship, allowing for a single-player experience. This feature is introduced in the Prologue, which not only serves as a tutorial, covering essentials like shooting, space suit flying, ship operation, and combat, but also enriches the game's lore.

Jump Ship now boasts a compelling narrative that enhances its core PvE gameplay. The plot revolves around a malicious virus infecting machines across the galaxy, which players, as Atirans, must combat at the galaxy's heart. Players navigate through procedurally generated mission chains in each sector, with missions ranging from 10 minutes to an hour. The Jump Map helps players gauge the level of danger and potential rewards for each mission, color-coding their choices accordingly.

Aiding players on their quest is Iris, an uninfected AI discovered in the Prologue, who narrates the missions and adds structure to the gameplay. The Hangar serves as a central hub where players can spend in-game currency on customization, explore the Galaxy Map, and even play soccer during downtime.

The core four-player gameplay is exhilarating. Missions rarely go as planned; en route to destinations, ships may be attacked, requiring one player to pilot while another operates the ship's weapons. Meanwhile, players outside the ship, equipped with magnetic boots, can engage enemy ships. If damage occurs, players must quickly respond by extinguishing fires within the ship to maintain its functionality, humorously referred to as keeping the "pineapple pizza-maker" operational!

Upon reaching the destination, the team disembarks to retrieve the loot, facing relentless infected robots that demand strategic teamwork. Grappling hooks facilitate swift movement in both terrestrial and space environments, crucial for retrieving the loot and ensuring a safe return to the ship.

Both my initial demo last year and the recent one were brief, yet they underscored Jump Ship's ability to deliver fun in short sessions, without requiring extensive time commitments. However, I have yet to fully explore the broader mission structure and the variety offered by procedural generation to confirm its promise of endless replayability. Nonetheless, everything I've experienced so far indicates that Jump Ship has all the makings of a potential hit. I eagerly anticipate delving deeper into this promising game.
